The essence of Mexico can be discovered in the beauty of the Oaxacan landscapes, with its mountains, its churches, its pyramids and the miscegenation that creates a cultural melting pot of this land and its people.

We propose a combination of culture and enjoyment. Visiting  the most emblematic places where you can discover the cradle of the Zapotec civilization, the richness of its gastronomy, the importance of identity, latent in its textile crafts, pottery and take a breath in one of the most beautiful Mexican Pacific beaches.

On the way to Oaxaca we will also make a one night stand in the majestic and colonial city of Puebla de Zaragoza, famous for its architectural and gastronomic heritage.

Tour Plan

1
DAY 1. MEXICO CITY - PUEBLA CITY
7:00 am Pick up and ride to the city of Puebla (110km) where we will do a first stop in Cacaxtla to admire the magnificent and well preserved pre-hispanic murals of this archeological site. Its name comes from the Nahuatl word “cacaxtli or cacaxtle”, which refers to the traveling baskets used by merchants to transport their merchandise. The site stands out for being the best preserved murals in Latin America, which were elaborated with minerals of local origin. Afterwards  we will visit the amazing church of Tonanzintla, considered one of the most unique temples in the Christian world, allowed the fortunate conjunction of two worldviews: the Judeo-Christian and the Mesoamerican. The decoration of the interior of the temple corresponds to the indigenous baroque or novo-Hispanic baroque style, consisting of an exuberant decoration with indigenous motifs, such as angels with feather plumes, with garlands of flowers, with eagle knight attire and with indigenous features, fruits and plants. Finally we will arrive in the colonial city of Puebla, where we will have time for lunch and try the richness of the poblano gastronomy. After, we will enjoy a walking tour in the Historic center, where you can appreciate the purest example of baroque and neoclassical architecture starting with the cathedral, the main theater, the municipal palace and surrounding buildings.

DAY 2. PUEBLA - OAXACA CITY TOUR

7 am Breakfast

8 am departure to the city of Oaxaca (340 km). Upon arrival, we will take lunch and  a walking tour through the historic center of the city, where we will find the Zocalo Square with the Government Palace, whose colorful murals illustrate the history of the region, the Alameda de León square where the cathedral of Oaxaca and the Temple of Santo Domingo, one of the clearest expressions of New Spain's baroque. Then we will go to the Market to be able to taste the popular food and make gastronomic purchases.

 

Transfer to the hotel, check in and free time.

DAY 3. OAXACA CITY - MONTEALBÁN - GASTRONOMIC NIGHT

After breakfast, we will go to the archaeological site of Monte Albán, a city founded in 500 BC that became one of the most important cities in Mesoamerica. Built on the top of a mountain in the center of the Central Valleys of Oaxaca, it functioned as the capital of the Zapotecs from the beginning of our era until 800 AD. Its original name was Ocelotepec (place of jaguars) but it was the Spanish who changed the name to Monte Albán due to its great resemblance to the Albanian Mountains in Italy. We will visit the Central Plaza, the Plaza de los Danzantes, the Stelas area, the Ball Games, etc. After that, visit of the ancient Tule tree and time for lunch. Return to Oaxca where we will visit the Culuras museum and Santo Domingo Temple.

 

Free time and dinner tasting Oaxacan food in a restaurant that combines the traditions of the region to merge them with more innovative proposals.

DAY 4. OAXACA CITY - MITLA - TEOTITLÁN DEL VALLE - OAXACA CITY

After breakfast we will depart to the archaeological zone of Mitla (50km) to see this important center of political and religious power for the Zapotecs of the valley after the disappearance of Monte Albán as the main city.

Time for lunch in the area.

Then we will make a stop in Teotitlán del Valle, famous for the artisanal elaboration of rugs. We will visit a rug workshop to learn about the technique of dyeing and weaving and we will take a chocolate workshop in a local family home.

 

Back to Oaxaca.

DAY 5. OAXACA - MAZUNTE
 

After breakfast we will ride to Mazunte beach (3 hours drive) where we will spend 3 nights of leisure and relax.

  Accomodation in a Boutique hotel seafront.

DAY 6. MAZUNTE
  Leisure time and in the afternoon we will hike to Punta Cometa to enjoy the sunset in the sea.

DAY 8: RETURN TO MEXICO CITY VIA OAXACA CITY
After breakfast, we will return to Mexico City with a stop for lunch in Oaxaca. * The order of the visits may vary in order to adapt to the needs of the itinerary.
